Page 2: From ROWUSD Superintendent, Dr. Paul Sevillano, A Message from the Superintendent: Dear ROWUSD Families, Staff, and Community Members,
As Superintendent of Rim of the World High School District, I am proud to serve a community where learning and nature come together at the top of the world. Our schools are more than classrooms; they are vibrant learning communities built on shared values, strong partnerships, and a deep commitment to our students’ success.
Recently, Moneyinc.com featured “The 30 Best High Schools in Southern California: A Comprehensive Guide”, written by Dana Hanson. The article highlights schools with strong academic programs, mental health services, career guidance, high graduation rates, college readiness, well-rounded extracurricular opportunities, and professional development for teachers. We are honored that Rim of the World High School was ranked 28th among the top 30 high schools across Southern California, an achievement that reflects the dedication of ROWUSD students, teachers, staff, and families.
To put our recognition into context: there are over 4,185 high schools in California, and many hundreds in Southern California alone; being ranked among the top 30 is a significant accomplishment. It highlights the strength of our entire school community and the collective efforts of students, teachers, staff, families, and partners. (HighSchools.com; Data provided by National Center for Education Statistics, 2023-2024 school year).
Every day, our teachers and staff live out the district’s core beliefs: that every student has unlimited potential, relationships are the foundation of learning, and collaboration with families and community partners creates lasting impact. These beliefs inspire our impactful actions, from providing personalized academic support and counseling to expanding career pathways to prepare students for life beyond graduation.
Our district’s efforts are aligned across all schools to ensure a consistent, supportive environment for every student learner. Whether through targeted tutoring, wellness programs, and innovative teaching practices, our mission remains clear: helping each student thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
As a future-focused district, our teachers and staff continually engage in continuous professional development centered on research-based instruction and technology, equipping our students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Living in the mountains, students explore science in the forest, are inspired by nature, and develop the resiliency that mountain life naturally instills. These experiences cultivate confident and compassionate learners who are ready to rise above challenges and reach new heights.
Together with our families, teachers, staff, and community, we are building a legacy of excellence that truly reflects our mountain home: strong, grounded, and always reaching higher.
Page 3: Celebrating Lights On Afterschool & Recognizing Leadership in Expanded Learning! Each October, communities across the nation come together to celebrate Lights On Afterschool—a day dedicated to recognizing the power of expanded learning programs (ELOP) that keep our students safe, engaged, and inspired beyond the traditional school day. Here in California, this celebration holds special meaning. Our state continues to lead the way in reimagining how learning takes place—before and after school, during summer, and across every community. During this year’s celebration, the California Department of Education (CDE) Expanded Learning Division (EXLD), in partnership with the System of Support for Expanded Learning (SSEL), proudly honored outstanding leaders through the California Expanded Learning Leadership Awards. We are especially proud to recognize our ELOP Coordinator, Kaylee Bunyon, whose leadership, passion, and commitment have helped bring meaningful after-school opportunities to students across our district. Through Kaylee’s efforts, our Expanded Learning program continues to grow, providing students with safe, engaging spaces to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with caring mentors.
Let’s come together to celebrate Kaylee Bunyon, who received the Innovative Leadership Award, and all those who make Expanded Learning a vital part of our students’ educational journey.
